Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

To join the Corps costs $25.00.  Dues each month are $15.00.

What do I get for that?

When you join, you are given a plastic fife or a pair of drumsticks, a book of sheet music, and our CD recording to use when practicing.  Each week, a professional musician will teach you in small groups or individually.  You will be given the chance to earn a full uniform.  You will be transported to and from our events by our own bus.  You are enrolled in the scholarship program.  And you get to join in on all of our fun activities.

How old do you have to be to join?

To be a member of the Corps you must be at least 8 years old.  You may remain in the Corps until you are 21.

How do I join?

Come visit the Corps on a Friday night between 7pm and 9:30 pm at the Community Center on Main Street in Hackettstown, NJ.  The application form is in a packet you will receive when you visit.  Return it along with the permission slip and the $25.00 and you are in.

Do you have to make every practice?

No, however you have to attend at least 66% of all practices and events in order to maintain your scholarship account.

What if I don't like it after I am in it?

You may resign from the Corps at any time. If you change your mind and wish to re-join, you may do it one time. However, you will forfeit any seniority rights if you do so.

How do I find out about the events?

Each month we publish a calendar for that month.  Calendars are given out at practices and posted on our website.  In addition, before each event, you are given a detailed sheet about the event.

Do I need to know how to play or how to march before I join?

No. We will teach you everything you need to know.

Can my parents join me on the trips?

Yes. Parents and Guardians are always welcomed to join us at any time during practices or at any event.

Can my parents stay during Friday night practice?

Yes. Parents and Guardians are always welcomed to join us at any time during practice or at any event.

How do I learn how to march?

You will receive instructions on the proper marching steps.

Do you have any rules?

Yes. Every group has its own set of rules that all must follow.  We do too.  You will be given a rulebook that is to be followed.  It is very simple - proper behavior is expected at all times.

Is it hard to march in a parade?

Some members find it more difficult to march in parades.  The first time might be scary but it is easy after you do it once. You will start marching in the color guard carrying a flag, a rifle or the banner. When you are ready, you can march and play an instrument at the same time.

Do I need to buy anything to join?

Yes. If you are a drummer, you will need to buy a practice pad, which is available at any music store.  Any style you wish is fine.  A fifer has no additional cost for the instrument. Once you earn your uniform, all members need to have a white shirt, black shoes and black socks.

How do I learn my music?

Your instructor will teach you all that you need to know.  Plan to practice at least 15 minutes a day. Once you can play a limited repitoire you will play in parades. When you learn all the music in the book, your instructor will give you more.
